1:1 Mentorship vs. Team Training: Which One Do You Actually Need?

We get asked this a lot, usually by individual QA engineers trying to figure out whether to ask their manager for a team workshop or just book time on their own.
Training and workshops are for teams
If the goal is to get an entire QA org speaking the same language — the same tools, the same review checklist for AI-generated tests, the same escalation path when AI gets it wrong — a workshop or in-company training is the right format. It's synchronous, it's shared, and it creates a common baseline everyone can build on.
Mentorship is for you, specifically
1:1 mentorship exists for a different problem: the gap between "I understand the concept" and "I can apply this to my actual, messy, specific test suite." A workshop can't debug your CI pipeline or review the prompt you wrote for your flaky checkout tests. A mentor can.
A simple way to decide
- Rolling out AI testing practices across a team or org → in-company training or a workshop
- Stuck on a specific, personal skill gap → 1:1 mentorship
- Not sure where you stand → start with an assessment, and let the results point you to the right format
Most people end up doing both, in sequence: a team gets aligned through a workshop, and the individuals who want to go deeper follow up with mentorship.
